While this is by no means the only type of resources that we should be seeking, there are certain lessons to be learned from people who have managed to amass this particular type of wealth.

The wealthy don’t achieve their status by happenstance. Only through tireless work and dedication are we able to reach our goals, and the road to success is wrought with challenges. However, no one said that the journey would be impossible, or the challenges insurmountable. Whether you’re just starting your journey to success or already walking the path, these quick and easy tips can save you mountain of stress.

Meditation
Without aligning your body and mind, you can’t expect to get far on your path to success. Meditation is a cheap and easy way to preserve the mind, and prepare yourself for a day of work. Regardless of your location, closing your eyes and centering yourself is an excellent way to be sure that stress doesn’t get the better of you. Many celebrity names, from Oprah to Rupert Murdoch endorse this practice as a healthy way to maintain your focus.

To-Do-Lists
Write to-do lists and stick to them. As the old saying goes, “failing to plan is planning to fail.” While tired, this holds as much weight now as it did during its first utterance. Plan out your day’s activities the night before, and rise early to get started. No success story began with sleeping in and shirking responsibility. Making a habit of this healthy exercise will not only align your internal clock for productivity, but encourage personal organization skills that will translate to every facet of your working life.

Develop Your Network

Networking is key when establishing your business presence. Researchers have found that those who network perform better at work and benefit from an increased likelihood of achieving a promotion. Personal, genuine networking in the workplace increases recognition among peers, and creates a positive environment.

Use Your Time Wisely

Hours are the steps to success, and you must use them wisely. Direct your energies toward improving your personal work ethic or business acumen. Stagnation is the enemy of progress, and the only way to fight stagnation is with ceaseless forward motion. When available, use downtime to sharpen your skills. Reading is an exceptional way to expand your mind and vocabulary. Television, while entertaining, is the enemy of progress. Allow yourself to be sucked into a program, and an entire day can slide by without you ever noticing. In a recent study, 67% of wealthy people were shown to watch television for only one hour a day, choosing to spend their leisure time reading.

Develop a Financial Plan

Lastly, though it may seem like the most obvious step, take the time to develop a rock-solid financial plan. Build and supply an emergency fund for those rainy days, construct a contingency plan for when you’re stretched thin, and plan months in advance. A little bit of work now can save you a massive headache in the future.

In a recent article published on Entrepreneur.com, David Hassell, CEO and Founder of 14Five, discusses leadership qualities that you should cultivate in yourself, as well as look for in others. 

Willingness to learn. Even once you have made it to the top and have proven yourself, it’s important to continue your growth. Being a leader does not equate to having all the answers and you should feel comfortable to ask questions. Additionally, once you are removed from the front-line, you are prone to become less familiar with day-to-day processes. Firsthand knowledge can potentially become less relatable. “Asking questions on a regular basis allows for uncovering great employee ideas and insights that might otherwise go unnoticed”.   

Intuition. In today’s data-driven world, most people weigh all the facts before making a decision. While this is not wrong, sometimes the data doesn’t lead to an obvious answer and you will need to trust your intuition. Take everything you know into account before making your decision but learn to trust your gut. “Once the decision is made, stand by it so that others will feel confident about your leadership”.

Ability to let go. This is a very important quality to have. Nothing is more aggravating or frustrating than having your manager constantly breathing down your neck. Employees who work under micromanagement don’t blossom and flourish. Furthermore, managers who aren’t capable of delegating for fear of not getting the job done, don’t ultimately get anything done. A leader needs to be able to let go and trust his team. Not only will this free up your time and allow you to focus on some higher-level tasks, but “it [also] sends the message that you trust others to perform in their own zones of genius”.

Adaptability. Picture this: you have created the perfect strategy and outline for your next project and something comes along to throw your plan off course. It happens; it’s as simple as that. A leader needs to be able to “fearlessly adapt to change and encourage others to be nimble enough to roll with the punches.” 

Encouraging. “As a leader, it is far better to inspire people to push against their own boundaries than have them shut down under demands and threats.” Provide guidance and motivation; be nurturing. It’s important to not just tell people what to do but to work together and define achievable goals and objectives.

The 5 Keys to Successfully Manage Creative Employees

It’s a steady balancing act of maintaining a nurturing environment that encourages employees to take risks and explore new directions, and pushing your employees to ensure work is produced on time and on budget.

Rodriguez seems to have found a happy medium and has come up with 5 keys to successfully manage creative employees without creating a restricting environment.

Make teamwork the priority. Negative feedback is always tough to give. Giving negative feedback to creatives is even harder. To make it easier as well as promote constructive feedback, focus on the value of teamwork as opposed to individual accomplishments. This way you aren’t singling anybody out; you are rallying your team to pitch in and collectively find a new solution.

Cultivate non-attachment. Encourage open mindedness. It’s important to remember that at the end of the day, they are creating for the business, not their own personal fulfillment. Also, realistically, whatever they come up with will ultimately undergo edits and in some cases even be thrown out. Rodriguez advises to “adopt an agile approach: Produce ideas quickly, provide timely feedback and push for rapid iterations of concepts.” This will make it less likely to become overly attached to ideas.

Hiring is key. Hire people that possess the mindset you need and can function on an egoless team. This can be tricky to find because you need individuals that are both talented and able to take constructive feedback when it comes to their work; someone who is open to trying new ideas. Key traits to look out for here are individuals that are keen on finding solutions and looking at a piece of work from every possible angle.

Don’t point fingers. The key here is to be consistent – in sickness and in health. You can’t encourage teamwork while things are going well and then point fingers and blame specific people when things don’t go as planned. You have to be all in when you’re part of a team; you share your success as well as your failures.

Customize your praise. This may seem hypocritical, following the previous statement; however, it is also important to recognize individual efforts. As much as people enjoy celebrating collective achievements, they also appreciate and deserve recognition for their personal contributions. Approach your team members to find out “how they prefer to be recognized and then show your appreciation appropriately”.

The article lists nine habits that help these professionals “master their craft, grow their businesses and achieve extraordinary success.” Here’s a look at the first 5.

1. Plan for the long term

In today’s competitive market, it’s all too tempting to focus mainly on short-term goals. After all, clients expect you to deliver products and services in a timely fashion. You also have a fiduciary responsibility to your company, partners and investors. However, by focusing solely on the short term, you may be selling yourself short. It’s crucial to make time to plan for the future; routinely monitor your progress on achieving long-term goals.

2. Communicate quickly and effectively

Make it a rule of thumb to respond to emails, phone calls and other requests immediately. I know, this is sometimes easier said than done; however, time is money and the amount of time it takes you to respond could be the difference between making or losing a sale. Additionally, by responding quickly, you’ll develop a reputation for reliability. In your workplace, time and effective communication will create a culture of focused efficiency.

3. Spend money wisely

Again, this is easier said than done but it’s important that you pay close attention to your company’s finances and are mindful of monthly expenses; you want to avoid going over budget or incurring unneeded costs. When evaluating how to spend your company’s funds, always consider the ROI. Ask yourself “How long will it take me to recoup my investment?” and “Will this investment help me achieve the goals of my business?” If you’re not able to answer these questions, you should not spend the money.

4. Set a daily routine

Create a schedule for yourself that outlines your ideal rundown for the day. Additionally, determine your most important tasks within that schedule to help keep you focused and on track. 

Prioritizing urgent tasks over those that are less crucial will help you avoid distractions.

5. Meet challenges with enthusiasm

If you put your best foot forward and deliver on the variables that you have control over, things will tend to fall into place. This is not to say, that if you do your best everything will go your way, but more times than not, you’ll experience positive outcomes. It’s important to remain as passionate as you were when you first started your business and face every challenge head-on.

MVP Leading Player

University of Kentucky LogoThe term leader is typically applied to business applications, often indicating the position of Chief Executive Officer in a successful company. However, all leaders must start somewhere. In the case of Jennifer O’Neill, that start comes in the form of the leading player on the University of Kentucky’s basketball team, according to an article recently completed for the Kentucky Kernel. O’Neill was a crucial component of the team for the 2013-2014 season. She led the team in scoring with 12.6 points per game and 3-point field goals. She was the team’s offensive game plan, leading UK to a 19-4 record on the season. O’Neill even managed a double-figure scoring game. All of these achievements combined earned her the title of most valuable player for the season.

What’s even more impressive is when her size is considered. Standing at five feet six inches, O’Neill is actually considered short for her sport of choice. However, despite her lack of height, O’Neill has a commanding presence, fulfilling the requirements of a leader for a sports team. In sports, a leader is often a player who is dedicated to working towards the team’s ultimate goal. The team’s leader is a figure that other players look up to for guidance outside of their coaches. A leader is usually assumed to be a dominating player that controls not only the locker room, but also the opponents on the field or court. O’Neill does just that, serving as support for her teammates when they need it. In addition, she has often been spotted arguing with Matthew Mitchell, head coach for the team; in the process, she followed her heart and said what she felt needed to be said. As a result, she not only earned the respect of her teammates, but her coach as well.

O’Neill will continue to be a valued member of the team for the 2014-2015 season. She serves as one of four seniors playing on the team; however, it is suspect that she and Bria Goss will be the two seniors seeing the most playtime in the season. It is the hope that O’Neill will contribute just as she did last season, leading the team to their sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

However, in the case of executives in the United Kingdom, it appears this is not an option. Instead, the pool of Chief Executive Officers and officials company’s choose from appears to operate as an exclusive club, with only certain members being seen as potential leaders for companies, according to an article recently completed by Forbes.

Exclusive Pool of Executives

It has long been an accepted fact that the pool of executives in the United Kingdom is not only limited, but exclusive. Several years ago, the very group of individuals deemed that it would be too difficult to increase the number of women to make the endeavor worthy. This declaration reinforced the elitism of the industry and the inherent need for mutual and familiar recommendation.

Protection From Leadership Risk

However, a study produced by Hire Rite, Limited, a global due diligence company, entitled The Untouchables: Protecting Your Organization From Leadership Risk, confirmed the previously assumed fact that the leadership pool was simply an exclusive club. For the study, one hundred and forty Human Resources directors for some of the United Kingdom’s biggest companies were survived. The study found that sixty six percent of these Human Resource directors admitted that they failed to verify the background of new members of their organization. Thirty one percent of new Chief Executive Officers to the company do not undergo due diligence tasks during the process of their appointment. In addition to this, twenty four percent of Human Resource directors believe board members never once had their qualifications, work history, criminal record or social media profiles researched prior to employment; this statistic applies to the entirety of the board member’s entire careers. Specifically, forty five percent of Human Resource leaders say they know of companies where Chief Executive Officers go through significantly fewer interviews and tests than newly hired graduates. In addition, thirty seven percent of these leaders admit that this is the case for their own company.

This is not due to a lack of qualification on the part of those working with Human Resources. Ninety three percent of Human Resource members declare that they are able to carry out due diligence practices. However, forty nine percent admit that they assume the candidate simply wouldn’t lie on their resume. In addition to this, forty nine percent of executives win their position based purely on their connections. All of these statistics combine show an executive pool riddled with lies and faults. A call for improvement is beyond necessary.

To walk entrepreneurs through this process, the author Edmund Ingham provided several helpful hints that have been found in noted leaders.

First, a good leader must be fearless, or a business would never get off the ground. The author also notes that people are inclined to follow those with guts—who are willing to take risks. It is also important to be visible; leaders must not hide, as being seen by employees builds their faith in the leader.. Along similar lines, engaging with employees also makes the entrepreneur approachable. Get to know the employees’ hobbies and likes. Interact with them frequently, confidently and positively.

Good leaders aren’t afraid to delegate decisively; a line must be toed between expressing the importance of the task, and the faith the leader has in the employee to complete the job adequately. A good boss creates a culture; goals are set and are not wavered from. Thus creating a message the staff can feel passionate about. As culture is created, morale should never waver.

Leaders must find a way to walk a line between having fun in the workplace and competing within their market. As a startup, it is highly unlikely that the entrepreneur will be able to pay their employees very much; therefore, it becomes crucial that a leader finds a means of entertaining the employees, to prevent them from exploring alternative options. However, competition is very important; a good leader strives to win every point. To do this, it can be very valuable to always remain one step ahead. At the start of the company, the leader is inherently ahead of the employees—in power, knowledge and experience. As the business expands, it is important to continue analyzing every development, as a means of maintaining that authority. Finally, it is most important to remain relaxed and try to avoid paranoia. Character: To Lead By Example

A leader must lead by example. Honesty amongst colleagues is crucial; as the head of the organization, the leader must redefine a new moral example and code.  The company in creation is a direct reflection on the entrepreneur; therefore, the leader must reflect on the message they wish to send to the community and their employees. Creating a list of sought after values and posting it around the office can be very beneficial, not only to insuring that the boss keeps in line, but that the employees adapt the beliefs as well. Commitment is also important in terms of setting an example for employees.  If the leader expects their workers to be dedicated and hard working, they must first show that they are committed to the project too.  Nothing serves as a better motivational tool than seeing the boss down in the trenches.

Ability to Inspire Motivation

Motivation, in general, is key. If morale is low, productivity will suffer.  Several key components can be employed to insure morale never falters.  A sense of humor and confidence will certainly come in handy.  By setting an example of laughing off mistakes instead of wallowing in shame, employees will follow suit; in no time, setbacks will be viewed as temporary faults, not devastating damages, particularly if confidence is deployed to remind that setbacks are natural in business.  In general, a positive attitude can work wonders. A simple gesture, such as providing coffee or snacks, can boost morale for the day. The leader must remember that every member of the team is a person.  Addressing the needs of the individual will allow for the office mood to find the perfect balance between productive and playful.

Creativity and Intuition

Creativity and Intuition aren’t necessarily two aspects that one naturally assumes leaders need to have to succeed.  However, the article indicates that both can really help with navigating the road of the unknown. Creativity will help in the task of making on the fly decisions—scenarios that typically involve choosing between the lesser of two evils. If the leader can think outside the box, they may be able to adapt the less than positive idea to suit their needs. Along similar lines, intuition can help the leader in making the difficult decision to begin with. Finally, two well-known traits are mentioned—an ability to delegate and trust the talents of the team and strong communications skills to convey the conviction and vision of your dream.
